Congratulations to Mo and Julie at Strawberry Field Tavern, who have won Pub of the Month for February. We caught up with Julie to see what she had to say:
How and where did you start in the hospitality industry?
I have been working within the industry since the age of 14 starting as a team member in a pub kitchen and quickly moving to Bar Supervisor by the age of 18. I have stayed within the industry for the remainder of my career working for the likes of Yates, Greene King, and Stonegate. I finally moved to Inbar two and a half years ago working at the Fountain in Chichester then moving to the Strawberry Field Tavern in January of 2016.
What do you like best about running the Strawberry Field Tavern?
The best part is that every day is different. I like the interaction with guests and getting to know them; it is very rewarding to hear them talk about how the pub has changed so dramatically and how they have returned to the pub after 15-20 years. This is truly down to the hard work and commitment of the team around me who strive for outstanding customer service as well as the quality of the food being delivered by the kitchen team.
How do your team sum up the Hall and Woodhouse values?
Hall and Woodhouse believe that every pub and every Business Partner matters. The support they offer has been immense and we try to replicate these values when considering our team. We encourage pride and passion in our own public house by working hard and closely with our team. This enables us to be a complete unit striving for the very best service and product.
What’s your favourite pub event of the year?
Our favourite pub event so far has to be New Year’s Eve. With all tickets sold, it was great to see the place full with people having a fantastic time. I am also looking forward to two huge events due this year – Strawbfest (Music and Beer Festival) and Fireworks Night where we will be holding a massive display in the car park, along with fairground rides, food stalls and live music.
How is your pub part of the local community? And what kind of people do you have visiting your pub?
The pub has now become the hub of the community attracting a wide variety of customers from local shoppers, business workers, locals, families and couples. We are proud to be able to offer something for everyone.
What sort of food is offered at the Strawberry Field Tavern and what is your signature, most popular dish?
The food offer at the Strawberry Field Tavern is true, honest pub food offering a selection for all. Alongside this we also offer special weekly offers such as 50% off all food on Monday, and Fish and Chip Friday. Our Fish and Chips is one of most popular dishes along with the Hall & Woodhouse Award Winning Pies.
What’s good to see and experience in your area after a visit to the pub?
The pub is situated perfectly between Portsmouth and Southampton, both only a short train ride away and even less by car. There is also a fairly new shopping and cinema complex within Whiteley which is only a stones-throw away. For those who are less keen on shopping, we are within walking distance to sea at Warsash or Lee on Solent.
And lastly, if you were to recommend a perfect combination of Badger Ale and a meal for your guests, what would you recommend?
The perfect combination for us would be the Steak and Tanglefoot Pie accompanied with a perfect pint of Tanglefoot itself.» Back to news list
