December Pub of the Month: The Bear Posted on December 20, 2016, in
Congratulations to Darren at The Bear, Horsham, who has won Pub of the Month for December. We caught up with Darren to see what he had to say:
How and where did you start in the hospitality industry?
We opened the Bear as our first public house in October which is run by myself, my wife and our daughter. Although we are new to the industry, we know the town and the pub very well and can see the potential it has.
What do you like best about managing your public house?
I think the social aspect is the best part of running a pub. We have a lot of regular guests who we have really enjoyed getting to know. A lot of our guests have returned as regulars since we opened and the positive feedback from them has been very rewarding.
How do your team sum up the Hall and Woodhouse Values?
Being a family run business ourselves, there is a lot of synergy with Hall & Woodhouse. After visiting the Brewery when we became Business Partners, it was clear to see the pride Hall and Woodhouse has of the heritage brand and family run business which we carry through in our pub.
What’s your favourite pub event of the year?
We have alternate Open Mic nights and Live Music every week throughout the year which our guests enjoy. We introduced these nights in October to show that we are a traditional wet-led pub and no longer a sports bar.
How is your pub part of the local community? And what kind of people do you have visiting your pub?
We are located in the Market Square in the centre of the market town of Horsham and are very much part of the local community. We have regular entertainment nights as well as a meat draw every Saturday, all of which are very popular. We have a good relationship with our guests, especially the locals, who will often pop in on their own for a pint and a chat with us.
What sort of food is offered at the Bear and what is your signature, most popular dish?
As we are a wet-led pub our guests aren’t looking for a sit down meal so we mainly offer sandwiches and bar snacks, the Tuna Melt being the most popular. We are looking to update our menu in the New Year and will take on feedback from guests for new ideas.
What’s good to see and experience in your area after a visit to the pub?
We are situated in the lovely market town of Horsham which offers a lot of history and things to do including shops, restaurants and museums as well as the picturesque Causeway. We are very lucky to be in the centre of town and just a few minutes from the surrounding countryside.
And lastly, if you were to recommend a perfect combination of Badger Ale and a meal for your guests, what would you recommend?
A pint of First Call with one of our popular Tuna Melts.
